Barefoot Investor Says It Takes Two to Win at Money

Barefoot Investor Says It Takes Two to Win at Money
Barefoot Investor Scott Pape

There's no such thing as 'get rich quick'. Most people can get themselves financially sorted in one year, then go on to become financially successful in six years. Yes, those are rubbery figures. But after helping thousands of people over many years, I've found them to be pretty much bang on.
— The Barefoot Investor, Scott Pape

Australian Oracle of Personal Finance Scott Pape has literally written the book on getting yourself out of debt and into financial success. His The Barefoot Investor is basic but vital for the anyone who feels their money never goes far enough. And Pape's first piece of advice for those who are married is to get your spouse on board.

As Pape explains, most people make very little financial progress in five years. They might have a higher income, some nicer clothes, and a better car. They will also have the same excuses and regrets about not saving more or slashing their debt.

If you want financial freedom, he says you need to take charge. So, Pape's nine-step program starts with a date night to talk about finances with your spouse. If you’re married, it's the two of you against the world.

If you're going to create an amazing life that isn't dictated by financial fears, you've got to work together and back each other up. There's no way around it: you need your partner on board. And years of experience have taught me that the way to get them on board is with nice food, a sprinkling of booze and a copy of my book.
