Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin began his industrious life indentured to his older brother but became one of the wealthiest men in America. He was famous for his principles of thrift, which he propagated through his Poor Richard's Almanack.

If you would be wealthy, think of saving, as well as of getting.
– Benjamin Franklin

This simple yet profound statement encapsulates a truth often overlooked in the relentless pursuit of income. Earning money is just one side of the coin; retaining and growing it is the other.

A man may if he knows not how to save as he gets, keep his nose all his life to the grindstone, and die not worth a groat at last.
– Benjamin Franklin

Franklin emphasised middle-class diligence and prudence to ensure that hard work translates into lasting financial security.

Today, we find an echo of Franklin's principles in none other than that contemporary oracle of personal finance, Suze Orman.

Orman herslef grew up with little. She worked as a waitress until her customers pooled more money than she made in a year and lent it to her to start her own cafe. When a reckless financial advisor lost all of that money, she felt called to become an advisor herself. That decision put her on the path to her immense success today.

Do I need to be frugal? No, not really. But I love it because when you respect money, when you honor money, no matter how much money you have, then your money turns around and honors you.
– Suze Orman

Orman's lifestyle choices are a living testament to thrift. She said her car was 12 years old and she planned to keep it for many more years.

As for her wardrobe, she owns just one purse, and it dates back to 1993.

Suze Orman's books include The Ultimate Retirement Guide for 50+ (updated in 2025) offers critical advice for later-life planning. For younger readers, Orman's Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, & Broke (2005) remains remarkably relevant. The Kindle edition is affordably priced.
