This Self-Made Billionaire Says Self-Pity Will Just Make Things Worse

This Self-Made Billionaire Says Self-Pity Will Just Make Things Worse
Charlie Munger

At the age of 31, Oracle of Finance Charlie Munger was divorced, was nearly broke, and had lost his young son to leukaemia. He did not indulge in self-pity, and that discipline of thought is the theme of today's post.

Generally speaking, envy, resentment, revenge, and self-pity are disastrous modes of thought. Self-pity gets pretty close to paranoia. Every time you find yourself drifting into self-pity, I don’t care what the cause, your child could be dying from cancer, self-pity is not going to improve the situation. It’s a ridiculous way to behave.

— Charlie Munger

Mental toughness and logical thought are two reasons that Munger achieved such success. After working as a lawyer, he ultimately became an investor and vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, alongside Warren Buffett. At the time of his death in 2023, he had a net worth of $2.6 billion.

This Thanksgiving, we could all take Munger's words as inspiration. You can read these and many other memorable lines in Poor Charlie's Almanack, The Essential Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger.
